Edgar, a 21-pound cat, arrived at the Humane Society of Carroll County in Maryland and the staff were shocked at how huge he was. Edgar’s previous owner left him at the shelter because the cat didn’t get along with his grandchildren.
Weighing 21 pounds, this 9-year-old cat is much bigger and heavier than the average cat. However, he is not as large as Samson, who was named the largest domestic cat in New York City.
The staff at the shelter called Edgar, The Gentle Giant because he was so calm and patient when they brought him to the center.
“Edgar was so sweet when he came to the shelter and went through his admissions process,” said Michelle Fidler, director of animal care at the Humane Society of Carroll County.
Since Edgar was undoubtedly large, Fidler decided to share his photo on the shelter’s Facebook page and was shocked at the number of reviews and comments they received on his photo.
“I never thought we would get as many responses as we did,” Fidler said. “Currently, the post has been seen by 1,402,479 people. It has 6.2K likes, 13K shares, and 6.7K comments.”
Edgar, the giant cat, instantly became an internet sensation and the shelter received a flood of adoption requests, and the numbers were overwhelming. A local woman and her boyfriend heard about Edgar and immediately went to the shelter to make Edgar a part of their family as well.
“As soon as I saw his picture, I was in awe,” Jenna Schwartz, Edgar’s new mom said. “I’ve never seen such a big cat, he really catches your eye. He’s gorgeous!”
Edgar now loves his new home, as well as his other rescued siblings, a cat named Loki and a Chihuahua named Thor. They get along well and love him as much as his new parents.
“Edgar’s situation is what we hope for every animal entering the shelter,” Fidler said. “He was brought to us, received his intake process, and was adopted all within a matter of a few hours. We couldn’t ask for anything better than that.”
Edgar is surely one very lucky cat!
