I Came Back from Vacation to Find My Neighbor Had Built a Fence Blocking My Windows — He Had No Idea What I’d Do Next

After a week at the beach, Kate was shocked to find her new neighbor, Tom, had built a huge fence right on her property line. As a single mom, she wasn’t going to just let it slide. How did she teach him a lesson he’d never forget?

Being a single mom is tough, but I make it work. I’m Kate, 40, and I’ve been raising my two boys, Leo (10) and Max (8), all on my own for the past year.

My ex and I split up when I caught him cheating with another woman. But that’s a whole other story.

A couple of months ago, I bought a new house and moved in with the boys. It’s in a quiet neighborhood with some beautiful woods nearby.

Everything seemed perfect until I met the guy next door, Tom. We bumped heads right from the start.

I’ll never forget the first time we talked.

We’d only been moved in for a day when someone knocked on my door. I opened it and saw him standing on my porch, holding a folder.

“Hey there, neighbor!” he said, holding out his hand. “I’m Tom. Welcome to the neighborhood!”

I shook his hand.

How nice! I thought. If only I knew what was coming.

“I wanted to talk to you about something important,” he went on, opening his folder.

“The old owners signed this paper letting me build a fence right on the property line.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Okay…?”

“So, I’m starting construction next week,” he said, like it was a done deal.

I was stunned. “Excuse me? You’re not even asking if I’m okay with it?”

“Well, I have the contract right here—”

“That was with the old owners,” I cut him off. “I own the house now, and I don’t want a fence blocking my view and my sunlight.”

That’s when his face went beet red.

“But I need this fence for privacy!” he yelled. “I’ve been planning this for months!”

“Why should I care what the old owner said?” I asked, but I never got a straight answer.

I just watched Tom stomp off in a huff.

Since that day, he argued with me almost every week about this fence. Apparently, he wanted to throw fancy garden parties without his guests seeing into my yard.

Well, sorry for breathing!

I couldn’t let him build that fence. I didn’t buy this house to stare at wood planks instead of the beautiful sky and trees.

Little did I know, things were about to get way worse.

A few weeks ago, I decided to take my boys on a much-needed trip. Leo and Max were super excited.

“Mom, can we go to the beach?” Leo asked.

Max chimed in, “Yeah! And can we build a giant sandcastle?”

“Of course, guys!” I said, hugging them. “We’ll do all that and more!”

We went away for a week, ready for sun, sand, and chilling out. If only I knew what was waiting for us when we got home.

As we pulled into the driveway, I noticed something weird. My stomach dropped when I realized what it was.

“Boys, stay in the car for a sec,” I said as I got out.

I was fuming with every step I took toward the house.

As I looked to the right, I realized what had happened. Right there, directly in front of our windows, stood a massive wooden fence. On our side of the property line. Just a foot away from my windows!

“What the hell?!” I yelled, not caring who heard me.

Leo and Max came running up behind me.

“Mom, what’s wrong?” Max asked, sounding worried.

I took a deep breath. I needed to keep it together for them. “Nothing, sweetie. Just a little… surprise from our neighbor.”

“But Mom,” Leo said with a frown, “we can’t see the trees anymore.”

It broke my heart.

Tom’s stupid fence had completely ruined the beautiful view my boys loved so much. Now, we couldn’t even see the sky!

I couldn’t let this go. I had to teach Tom a lesson.

I had two choices: go to court and wait for the city to do something, or handle it myself.

I went with the second option because my boys and I just didn’t have the time or money for a legal battle.

Later that night, I went to the pet store. I had a plan that I knew would work.

“Can I help you find anything?” the cashier asked.

I smiled sweetly. “Yes, I need an animal attractant spray. The strongest stuff you’ve got.”

When I got home, I waited until the whole street was asleep. Then, I walked up to his precious fence and dumped the whole bottle of liquid on it.

The smell was super strong. It was made to attract dogs for potty training. But I had a feeling it would attract a lot more than just dogs.

I did this for a few nights in a row, making sure the spray covered every inch of the wood.

Then, I waited.

It didn’t take long to work.

One night, while I was taking out the trash, I saw a stray dog hike its leg on the fence. I had to hold back a laugh.

“Good boy,” I whispered.

Over the next few days, more and more animals started visiting the fence. Foxes, raccoons, even a deer once! They all seemed to think Tom’s fence was the perfect bathroom.

I watched from my window as Tom found the mess one morning. His face turned bright purple when he realized what was going on.

But to my surprise, he didn’t take the fence down.

He started cleaning it.

Every morning, Tom would come out with a bucket and a scrub brush, mumbling to himself as he washed off the nightly mess.

But no matter how hard he scrubbed, he couldn’t get rid of the smell. The animals kept coming back, night after night.

Pretty soon, the stink was unbearable. Even my kids noticed.

“Mom,” Max said one day, holding his nose, “it stinks outside!”

Leo nodded. “Yeah, can we just play inside today?”

“I know it smells bad, guys,” I said. “Just give it a few more days, okay?”

They agreed, but I could tell they were bummed out. I just hoped my plan would work soon.

The next day, I was coming back from getting groceries when I saw another neighbor, Mrs. Davis, knocking on Tom’s door.

I slowed down, pretending to check my mail so I could listen in.

“Tom,” Mrs. Davis said, “what on earth is that smell coming from your yard? It’s awful!”

Tom looked so embarrassed.

“I… I’m working on it, Mrs. Davis. We’ve got a bit of an animal problem.”

“Well, work faster!” she snapped. “It’s making the whole street stink!”

As she stormed off, Tom caught my eye. He had this sorry look on his face that I’d never seen before. I just smiled at him and went inside.

That evening, I watched from my window as Tom went at the fence with every cleaning spray he could find.

He scrubbed and hosed it down for hours, but the smell stuck around. Finally, he threw his brush down and dragged himself back inside.

The next morning, a loud noise outside woke me up. I peeked through my curtains and had to blink a few times to make sure I wasn’t dreaming.

Tom was out there watching a crew of guys tear the fence down.

I couldn’t believe my plan actually worked!

I woke the boys up with the good news. “Leo! Max! Come look outside!”

They ran to the window, their eyes going wide as they watched the fence come down.

“Mom, we can see the trees again!” Max yelled.

Leo hugged me tight. “You’re the best, Mom!”

Just like that, our view was back, and Tom learned his lesson. But the story doesn’t end right there.

Later that afternoon, Tom walked over while I was doing some yard work out front.

“Kate,” he started, clearing his throat, “I, uh… I want to say I’m sorry.”

“Oh?” I acted surprised.

He nodded. “I shouldn’t have put up that fence without asking you. It was wrong.”

“Yeah, it really was,” I agreed, crossing my arms.

“I’ve learned my lesson,” he went on. “From now on, I’ll respect your property and be a better neighbor.”

“Apology accepted, Tom,” I smiled. “Let’s start over, okay?”

“I’d like that.”

As Tom walked away, I felt pretty proud of myself. I stood up for me and my boys, and in the end, it all worked out.

That whole thing taught me that sometimes life puts you in spots where you have to get a little creative to fix things—just like I had to come up with a plan to teach Tom a lesson he’ll never forget.

Do you think I did the right thing?
