I Introduced My Dad to My Fiancé at Our Wedding — Dad Took One Look at Him and Nearly Collapsed

I was just moments from marrying the guy I loved when my dad suddenly stopped moving next to me. One scared look from him ruined everything I thought was real.

I always believed my wedding day would finish with joyful tears, not deep pain. Most of all, I wanted my dad, Thomas, to walk by my side down the aisle.

My dad brought me up by himself after my mom walked out when I was young. He did my hair before classes, worked late shifts, and stayed with me whenever I felt ill.

He used to tell me, “Your life will be much better than mine. I’ll do whatever it takes to make that happen.”

Leo, my partner, had only met Dad a couple of times through spotty video chats while we stayed in Europe for three years. When we came back before the big day, Dad skipped the practice dinner since he felt sick.

Even so, he sounded happy on the call and said, “I’ll meet him tomorrow, when I hand you over.”

On the actual day, I stood at the church entrance with Dad. I heard my gown move, smelled the fresh roses, and noticed his shaky breaths.

When the song began, Dad took a few steps and then paused.

My partner waited at the front, looking happy.

My dad held onto my arm much harder.

“Dad?” I whispered loudly. “What is it?”

He looked right at Leo, his face turning totally pale.

“No…” Dad said softly. “This is impossible.”

Leo’s happy face faded away as he stepped in our direction.

Dad raised a trembling arm.

“How is this you?” he asked forcefully. “I was certain you vanished thirty years back!”

My legs almost collapsed under me.

“Do you two know each other?” I questioned.

Dad mumbled, “Wyatt…”

Leo glanced at me.

“There is a thing your dad never shared with you.”

My dad watched my partner like he was looking at a d3ad person.

“You are Marcus’s kid. You were only a small child the last time we met.”

Quiet talking moved through the crowd.

“What is going on?” I asked again.

Both of them stayed quiet.

Stella, my best friend, rushed up to us. “Everyone, please stay in your seats. We just need a little time.”

I dragged Dad into a tiny back room.

“Tell me what is really going on.”

“His actual name is Wyatt,” he explained. “He went by his middle name with you.”

I felt completely sick.

“I met his family a long time ago. Before you came along, I planned to marry a woman named Grace. After that, she wed Marcus. The rich builder. Together, they had a boy with a special mark on his face.”

Leo had a big red spot right on his cheek!

“Grace was the first person I truly loved,” he admitted. “But Marcus dragged her into his rich life. Their relationship got very bad. At that same time, the building business I worked for failed. Marcus helped hide some fake money deals connected to it.”

“And Wyatt showed up again because of all that?”

Dad glanced at the closed door.

“No. I believe he returned because of Grace.”

Stella pushed the door open.

“Leo wants to talk to her by himself.”

Dad jumped up. “No way!”

“I am not a little kid anymore.”

Unwillingly, he sat back down.

I walked out into the corridor.

My partner waited next to the colorful windows, looking anxious for the first time since we met.

“You did not tell me the truth.”

“I never lied about my feelings for you.”

“Then why keep your actual name a secret?”

“Because I figured this would be his reaction when your dad found out.”

He spoke more softly.

“My mom wasted years trying to figure out why her life was ruined. Right before she passed away, she mentioned your dad all the time.”

“Grace is gone?”

He moved his head up and down.

“My mom thought Thomas left her behind,” Leo explained. “She held it against him until her final day.”

“So you tracked me down because of him?”

“In the beginning, yes. I needed reasons. But then I actually fell for you.”

“You want me to buy that story?”

“I get how bad it sounds. But I never wanted things to go down like this today.”

I looked at his eyes hoping to find comfort.

But all I noticed was deep sadness.

“Did you ever plan to be honest with me?”

“Yes. I was just waiting for the perfect moment.”

I let out a sad laugh. “We were five minutes away from tying the knot.”

Leo dropped his voice again.

“Your dad is not blameless. My mom sent him a letter years later, but he never replied.”

“That makes no sense.”

“Then go ask him yourself.”

We walked back into the small room.

“Did Grace ever send you a letter?” I questioned Dad.

“Yes.”

A wave of anger washed over me.

“You said she picked that kind of lifestyle.”

“That is what I thought back then,” he replied. “But at that point, I was already married to your mom. You were just a newborn. I figured digging up old history would ruin our lives.”

“So you just ignored her message?”

“I convinced myself it was way too late.”

I stepped back as my trust in both of these men completely broke.

Stella walked in. “The crowd is getting restless. What is your plan?”

I stared at my partner.

“I do love you.”

His eyes watered up. “I love you, too.”

“Perhaps. But you grew our relationship on a lie.”

After that, I looked over at Dad.

“And you hid your past until it blew up on my big day.”

Neither of them tried to fight back.

My fingers trembled as I took off my ring.

Leo looked like he wanted to stop me, but he stood still.

“I cannot marry a person when I have no clue who they really are.”

The building was very quiet when I walked back out.

The priest came up to me. “Do you need a bit more time?”

I stared at the decorations, the lights, and the people who flew across the world for a marriage that was not happening anymore.

“We are not having a wedding today.”

Low voices spread across the room.

Leo just stood there, looking white and quiet.

Dad waited right behind me, holding onto regret that felt heavier than his years.

I took a deep breath, picked up my gown, and walked out the door with Stella by my side.

I did not feel left behind or totally crushed.

Just finally clear-headed and aware of reality.
