“My mom can’t take care of me anymore”: Cats abandoned with heartbreaking note, shelter writes a reply

When two cats were recently found abandoned, a heartbreaking note told the whole story – and an animal shelter wrote a touching response.

Brother Wolf Animal Rescue in Asheville, North Carolina, recently found two cats abandoned in a kennel in their yard. While most animal shelters don’t encourage such surprise drops, a note attached to the crate made it clear the cat’s owner was facing difficult circumstances.

“My name is Baby, my mom can’t take care of me anymore,” the handwritten note read. “Please find me and my sister our next home.”

“What heartbreaking news,” Brother Wolf Animal Rescue wrote on Facebook.

The animal shelter wrote a response to the owner showing great understanding and compassion for her situation.

“To the person who left them behind…you are safe with us and thank you for trusting us with your cats that you so obviously loved,” Brother Wolf Animal Rescue wrote. “We understand you had no other choice and we hope you are well.”

They also say the owner left the kennel in the shade, indicating a concern for their well-being even as she had to leave them behind.

Their response drew praise from followers online: “Thank you for being kind in your remarks to the person who left the cats with you,” one commenter wrote on Facebook. “Too often people ask how could anyone leave their pets like this. But this is the best thing for the pets and for the people too.”

Cases of animals abandoned at animal shelters happen again and again – many of these stories are shocking, even cruel. But this story shows that animal shelters are very understanding towards people in difficulty and welcome their animals without judging them.

Earlier this month, LifeLine Animal Project, a nonprofit animal shelter located in Atlanta, Georgia, went viral with a similar story in which they found an abandoned dog outside their facility. A note explained that the owner was homeless and unable to care for the dog and also provided important information about the animal.

“He is clearly loved,” the rescue wrote in an open letter to the owner. “We love him, too, and will do everything in our power to help him go home.” After they were unable to contact the owner, Milo was adopted into a new family.

It’s heartbreaking that this woman could no longer care for her two cats, but she did the right thing by putting them in the shelter’s care — hopefully, they will find their next homes soon.
